Width decides everything else. A 29-bead chart fits one square pegboard and suits icons and small characters; 40–58 beads is enough for a face or a pet; past 80 you are making wall art across several boards. Mini beads (2.6 mm) make the same chart about half the size of midi beads (5 mm) — the brand comparison explains which to buy.
A photo has thousands of colours; a bead chart that reads well from across the room usually has 8 to 20. Start low, raise the count only where detail disappears, and merge colours used for a handful of beads — each is another bag to buy. Look up any code and its matches in other brands in the colour charts.
